Things I Remember As A ChildChild

Mom was home when I got home from school.

When a dime was a good allowance.

When no one owned a purebred dog.

When you would stop and pick up a penny off of the ground.

When the gas stations were full service; you would get your windshield washed, tires checked, oil checked and air for your tires were free. There were very clean restrooms at the gas stations. You could get a free map; they would pump your gas into the tank and all of this was done with a smile.

I remember when it was a privilege to go out to eat at a restaurant with the family.

When know one locked their doors and the keys were left in the car.

When someone got hurt outside several mothers came to the rescue.

When our mother and grandmother's wore aprons to the table and while serving guest.

When Cokes were a nickel and candy was two for a penny.

When candy bars came in one size (large).

When you walked to and from school.

When you played marbles on the playground.

When girls loved to jump rope or play hop scotch on the side walk.

Walking down the railroad tracks.

Playing in a ditch full of fresh rain.

Camping out in a tent in the back yard.

Going out side to have a picnic.

Stopping at roadside picnic areas.

Going barefoot in the Summer.

Riding around town on Friday and Saturday night.

Remember when we couldn't get enough kool aid.

Playing outside past dark.

Empty lot football and baseball.

Riding your friends around on your bike.

Walking to the corner grocery of downtown.

When we use to have a little snow and the school closed so we could play in it.

Our teachers wore dresses or skirts and blouses or shirts and ties.

You played so hard outside that when you got home at night at dark you were tired and ready to go to bed.

You rode in the rear window of the car.

You rode on someone's lap in the car.

You rode backwards in the third seat of the station wagon.

All wagons had luggage racks on the top for your luggage.

When the dimmer switch was on the floor.

When the gear shift to change gears was on the column.

When you bought a car and added heat or air.

When you went shopping with your mother for your school clothes and school supplies.

When it was cool to were white socks and a white T-shirt.

Prank Calls

"Prince Albert in the can"

During the summers before caller ID, three way calling, call return we had mischievous kids with idle time on their hands and prank phone calls were made. One was calling the grocery stores and asking if they had any "Prince Albert in a can," to which they would answer, "yes", we do(because the tobacco is typically packaged in a can,. Which our reply back to them was, "Well, you'd better let him out!" or "Then why don't you let him out before he suffocates!?"

"Is you refrigerator running"

We would call people at home and ask the person that answered the phone, "Is your refrigerator running," "Yes," would be their reply. We would then tell them, "they better lay the phone down and go at catch it."

Cleaning Out Your Phone Line..,

What happens when you have several children together in the middle of summer and run out of things to do?

Well we knew that we would be visiting some of my mothers friends on Wednesday every week and one lady in that we would be visiting was very particular about having a very clean house. (she didn't have children)

We had gotten with a friend to have them call her house on the Wednesday that we would be there for our visit at 10:00 a.m.. After setting up the time for our friend to call this lady we called the ladies house on Tuesday evening and said that we were the cleaning crew for the Phone Company and that on Wednesday morning around 10:00 a,m, we would be blowing out the phone lines, and if she didn't want to get any dirt in her house she needed to wrap up her phone. We suggested that she put her phone in a bag and put something heavy on it to make sure that no dirt escaped.

On Wednesday morning we were overly excited to go on these visit's with our mother. After we were there for a few minutes the phone started to ring, it must have rang about five times before my mother said, "That must be an important call go ahead and answer it we don't mind." The lady said that's ok they will call me back later. The phone continued to ring and finally the lady looked at my mother and exclaimed that the Phone Company had called about blowing out the line, and why she couldn't answer the phone.

I don't know about you but we got that look from our mother and we just knew that the fun was over and the pain was shortly coming.

After apologies were made to the lady, we all received chores that we would do for the lady for one month for our misbehavior.
